Dr. John D. Sullivan

Dr. John D. Sullivan, Executive Director (retired), Center for International Private Enterprise, and Adjunct Professor, George Mason University

Dr. John D. Sullivan began his cooperation with the Center for Entrepreneurship in 2003. With a remarkable background in promoting private enterprise and democratic governance across the globe, Dr. Sullivan has been a stalwart advocate for economic reforms, emphasizing the critical role of institutional integrity and market-oriented policies. He has guided numerous international projects, impacting policy and development at national levels. His involvement has been pivotal in navigating complex economic environments to foster sustainable growth. Through his leadership at Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), the organization has expanded its reach, delivering impactful results worldwide. His tenure at CIPE is marked by innovative strategies and successful collaborations. Dr. Sullivan started as associate director of the Democracy Program in 1983, helping to establish both CIPE and the National Endowment for Democracy. After serving as CIPE program director, he became executive director in 1991. Under his leadership, CIPE developed a number of innovative approaches that link democratic development to market reforms, including combating corruption, promoting corporate governance, building business associations, supporting the informal sector, and programs to assist women and youth entrepreneurs. Dr. Sullivan retired as CIPE Executive Director in 2016. In addition to his work at CIPE, Dr. Sullivan serves as an adjunct professor at George Mason University and works as an independent consultant on international development. He is the author of numerous publications on ethics, corporate governance, and anti-corruption, including "The Moral Compass of Companies: Business Ethics and Corporate Governance as Anti-Corruption Tools", International Finance Corporation, 2009, and "The Role of Corporate Governance in Fighting Corruption," in the Russian National Council on Corporate Governance annual National Corporate Governance Report, October 2013.
